What Ph.D. programs does ITBA offer?

ITBA offers 4 programs:

What are the objectives and characteristics of these programs?

The programs aim to train researchers capable of independently developing impactful scientific and technological knowledge.

They have a personalized study plan, participation in R&D activities, publications or presentations at conferences, stays abroad and culminate with a doctoral thesis.

They are mainly focused on solving specific problems.

How long do programs last and what publications are expected?

The ITBA PhD programs last between 3 and 5 years, depending on the characteristics of the research to be developed.

During this period, a minimum of 400 hours of training must be completed, with specific variations according to the plan of each doctoral program. To complete the doctorate, at least two publications related to the research work are required. One of these must be in a top-tier international journal in the field (Q1/Q2), and the other in an indexed journal or in the proceedings of an international conference.

What is the maximum time allowed to complete a Ph.D.?

The doctorate must be completed within a maximum of 6 years.

What requirements do I need to meet to apply?

  • Degree of at least 4 years with national validity or foreign equivalents recognized in Argentina.
  • Sufficient english proficiency for reading and listening comprehension.
  • Present background information and research project at a meeting with the Program Director, who, together with the Doctoral Committee, will evaluate admission.

What is the admissions process like?

  • Complete and submit the registration application with the required documentation to the Department of Research and Ph.D. programs (invydoc@itba.edu.ar).
  • Contact a researcher as a potential supervisor to define thesis topic (https://investigacion.itba.edu.ar/investigadores/).
  • Request an interview with the Director of the Ph.D. Program. Based on your profile and research proposal, the Director may then forward your application to the Doctoral Committee.
  • Conduct an interview with the Doctoral Committee.

  • The Commission makes the final decision on admission.

Can research topics be chosen from the beginning?

Yes. It’s suggested to contact potential directors in advance to jointly define a feasible theme. Alternatively, the theme can be developed and defined during the interview process.

What is the expected academic workload?

The program requires full-time dedication and establishes a personalized modality.

During the program, the paths to be followed in terms of specific training are established; however, in all cases, an academic workload of 400 hours of training must be completed, which includes courses, presentations at conferences, and international stays.

In addition, at least two publications in internationally indexed journals must be achieved.

What kind of academic results are expected?

  • Presentation of progress reports.
  • Participation in conferences.
  • Publications in scientific journals.
  • Patents or registrations.
  • Public defense of an original thesis with impact.

How valid are the degrees?

All three programs are accredited by CONEAU, offering degrees with official recognition and national validity.

For international recognition, validation with the recipient country will be required based on existing agreements and conventions.

What is the cost of doctoral programs?

The costs of a doctorate depend on the research project in which they are involved.

The funding for these projects is subject to the availability of funds that the research to be developed entails.

Are there fellowships available for doctoral students?

Yes. ITBA offers annual fellowships programs that can be accessed based on the research project and the applicant’s academic merits. The vacancies offered by the institution are listed each year.

Is prior research experience required, or are recent graduates accepted?

Any applicant with a degree of at least 4 years with national validity or foreign equivalents recognized in Argentina, may submit an application for admission.

Prior research experience is valued, but not exclusive.

What is the course format?

The duration of the training courses (400 h) depends on the modality of the courses.

Courses developed at ITBA or at other national or international universities may be accepted.

The research activities are conducted in person.
